In the mid 19th century theatres and music halls used lamps which operated on a chemical reaction between a flame and quicklime. The light created by this reaction was used to illuminate individual actors on stage in much the same way as a modern spotlight. These ‘limes’ were the origin of the phrase ‘in the limelight’.
